Person Centred Approach

What is a person centred approach?

This website sets out the principles and values which underpin a person centred approach, and provides some tools, resources and examples of good practice.

We do not believe any one model or tool is the answer; a person centred approach is about working in a way that meets the needs of the individual, and responds to a variety of different contexts.

A person centred approach should not be an addition to the way that we work already, but a way of doing things differently, to achieve better outcomes for children, young people, their families and carers

“When we use the term “person centred” we mean activities which are based upon what is important to a person from their own perspective and which contribute to their full inclusion in society. Person centred planning discovers and acts on what is important to a person” - Valuing People

A Person Centre Approach for Devon

We believe that a person centred approach will empower the children and young people of Devon to be in control of their lives.

It supports everyone to be the best that they can be, ensures everyone has a voice and puts the young person at the centre of the planning and decision making process.

Devon believes that by working with a person centred approach, children, young people and their families will be supported to realise a better future.

A person centred approach reliably captures the voices of children and young people and embeds safeguarding into every aspect of provision. It does this through fully integrated working; trusted relationships between the young person and people who know and work with them, and the young person’s full participation.

Devon will support this by providing workforce development, training for young people and their families and the development of appropriate tools and processes.

A person centred approach makes the assumption that by asking the questions we are prepared to listen to the answers.

This will challenge individuals and organisations to make significant cultural change.
