Information Sharing Protocol
What is it?
Effective local information sharing needs a better understanding of the factors which support, and the factors which limit sharing. This will give practitioners greater confidence to share information appropriately; and make sure that children, young people and families are informed and understand the benefits of information sharing.
What are we doing in Devon?
A draft version of the Protocol 'in practice guidance' has been tested out 'in-practice' in the pathfinding areas. A short consultation is now taking place targeting staff originally trained. A final document will be completed for early June 2008.
Each partner organisation is signed up to the protocol. Partner Contact Officers act as the reference point for enquiries within each organisation. These are here (23KB - pdf help)

ISP FAQ
The Devon Children's Information Sharing Protocol (ISP) is intended to help provide better understanding by explaining when information can be shared, when it cannot be shared and how to share appropriately.
What are the objectives of the ISP?
- To produce an effective and practical Children’s Trust Information Sharing Protocol for Devon:
- To provide guidance and training for practitioners in order to support them to share information appropriately and improve outcomes for children and young people.
- To provide consistent guidelines to practitioners working with children and young people in Devon. In order to achieve this, the Protocol will need to be formally accepted, by all relevant organisations, as the definitive Protocol for sharing information about children and young people in Devon.
Who is it for and what does it include?
The Protocol consists of targeted information for agencies practioners and families.
The information can be divided into three categories:
- The Protocol itself – containing legal detail and to be signed-up to by all relevant organisations.
- A Practitioners' Guide which includes case studies, frequently asked questions, reference points, record keeping templates and reference leaflets
- An information leaflet for children, young people and families.
This will be supported by targeted practitioner training which will be delivered as a part of a larger integrated training programme covering the wider change agenda.
How does the ISP relate to other information sharing protocols?
Other information sharing protocols and agreements already exist between organisations for the sharing of information about children and young people in Devon. This Protocol will be the first, and the definitive, Devon-wide protocol for the sharing of information about children.
We recognise that specific agreements between particular agencies will still be required. However, by signing up to this Protocol partner organisations will agree that any other agreements will exist under the umbrella of the Devon Children’s Information Sharing Protocol and must reference it as the definite Protocol for the sharing of Information about children in Devon.
